{Emma} Four Months

Sister is your favorite person in the world.

Major stink eye. Toe-grabber.

Your left eye is lighter than your right eye.
Sister-sister.

Sweetest smile ever.

A little bit about you this month:
• Mommy stuck to her guns, maintaining that something was causing your reflux and that you are not "just colicky." I knew deep down that something was wrong - and guess what? You are milk-soy protein intolerant (MSPI). I have to be very conscientious of my diet and when something sneaks in - specifically soy because it's in everything - we can always tell within 2 to 6 hours. Especially the next day, you act extremely fussy, projectile vomit, your cheeks get red and chapped, and you get a diaper rash. It's amazing to see the difference in your demeanor when both of our systems are clear of the allergens! You are an entirely different baby! When you are yourself, you are a delight - you are very smiley and easy-going, you eat better, sleep better, don't puke (yay!), and only fuss when you're tired or want attention. I have also noticed you have a sensitivity to eggs, so for now I am avoiding milk, soy, eggs, and wheat. Fingers crossed this is something you grow out of but for now, you and I are in it for the long haul.
• You absolutely love being naked! If you're unhappy, if I go to change your diaper, you immediately smile and grab your toes.
• You grab your toes! This is my favorite new thing you are doing this month.
• You are roly poly but also very tall; your left eye is still lighter than your right eye; you have one extra leg roll on your left leg.
• You are a morning girl - you wake up between 5 and 6am almost every day.
• You want to be sitting up watching the world, riding in Daddy's arms facing outward, or standing on our laps all of the time. You want to see everything and be a part of the action.
• But the flip side of wanting to see everything all the time... you get overstimulated easily, especially by loud noises or having too many kids in your face, like at Tyke Town at the gym.
• You love to fly in the air and giggle the whole time!
• You prefer to nap at home and want it to be quiet while doing so. Napping on the go (in your carseat) is not your forte, although you will nap in the Ergo if we are out and about. Transferring in and out of the carseat... not so successful.
• You are trying so hard to roll onto your tummy! You get stuck three quarters of the way over and get so mad. Once we help you flip over, you're all smiles.
• You sleep on your tummy.
• You would prefer to snuggle and nurse all night long. Once in a blue moon, you will do a good chunk in your crib at the beginning of the night but you've been so sick this month, we've mostly snuggled.
• You survived RSV and a double ear infection (your second) this month.
• You love to kick your legs. Kick, kick, kick! You get extra kicky, active, and silly when you're almost ready for bed. It is a ton of fun!
• No one gets better giggles out of you than your sister-bear. At your well-check, she was jumping like a frog and you were laughing so hard I thought you were going to hyperventilate. You love her above and beyond anyone else and save your best smiles for her. If you are unhappy, she can usually make you grin. She has also taken to writing you songs and "playing" her guitar for you. "Emma... oh Emma... I love you... you are ooooookay..." It melts my heart.
• When Daddy gets home, you always give him the biggest smiles and watch him wherever he goes.
• You give the best stink eye! You tend to look very skeptical before you decide something is worth smiling about.
• You absolutely love to be sang to - skittermerink-a-dink-a-dink is your favorite song.
• You suck on your bamboo Aden & Anais blankets to settle yourself to sleep; you also prefer to go to sleep on your own for most naps, but not bedtime.

{Emma} Three Months

A little bit about you this month...
• You are a wiggle worm! On your back, you wiggle yourself around 270 degrees and travel a good two feet while doing so.
• You are a kicking machine, and love your kick and play piano.
• You are batting at toys and grabbing your favorites - the ball rattle, the zebra, and the elephant with the wooden circle at the bottom.
• You are quite the talker! You love to watch people speak, and talk back to us with lots of oohs, ahhs, Aye-yuhs, and squeals.
• You have discovered your hands and they are always in your mouth. When you spot your toes, you always look very surprised that they are attached to your body.
• You love ceiling fans.
• You blow bubbles.
• You always want to be on the move; you want whomever is holding you to be moving, especially your Dad. He's your personal house chauffeur. You squawk, he walks.
• You love your Johnny Jump-up, and love to stand in general.
• You are a very good sitter with some assistance.
• You have a very intense Moro reflex.
• When well-rested, your witching hour has become minimal.
• You tend to nap 40 minutes on the dot after being awake 90 minutes. Once a day, you will sometimes give me a longer nap.
• You love having someone eat your cheeks! You giggled for the first time when Mom was nibbling on those chubby cheeks!
• You giggle when Lily and Mom sing the "Batman" song and the "Emi Tako" song, aka "Emi Tako" to the Batman tune.
• When you're tired, you rub your face on your Aden & Anais bamboo blanket and sing to it.
• You definitely prefer your bamboo blankets over any of the others.
• Had a rough month between your first (and second!) colds, plus you caught Influenza A. But you were a trooper and are on the mend.
• Dr. Graham says your bottom gums are swollen already, so we may be adding some teething to the sickness mix.
• We have spent a lot of time at the pediatrician this month - in addition to the flu and colds, you have been having issues maintaining your body temperature and have been having screaming fits like you are in extreme pain. The doctor thinks your reflux is becoming painful, so we may be trying some acid blockers this month to see if it helps. You had some blood drawn and were so brave! And everything came back normal.
• But, as long as you aren't tired, you are a very much a smiley, happy little girl. Lily is always saying, "Emma is so happy today!"

{Emma} Two Months

A little bit about you this month...
• You are a total snuggle-bug, and love to be held all day long.
• You started cooing and squealing.
• Huge grins for your sister! You love being called "Emi Tako."
• You caught your first cold.
• You absolutely love to stand.
• You don't spit up at all, but you explosively vomit - usually on Mom, then you smile and go to sleep on me so I can't shower!
• You are queen of the hiccups and get them multiple times a day. They really make you mad.
• You are tracking people and things, and seem to really enjoy your blue ball rattle.
• You cat nap during the day, usually for about 30 minutes - no more than an hour - and usually in the Ergo, but you often sleep one long stretch at night: 8-9pm until at least 2:30am!
• You giggle and smile in your sleep.
• You have a bit of an evening witching hour. We are gradually figuring it out, but you seem to want to snuggle or nurse on the move starting between 6 and 7pm until you finally vomit or fall asleep around  8-9pm. Sometimes earlier, sometimes later. You aren't in meltdown mode, but are very fussy unless we are walking, bouncing, or rocking while standing. It's Mom or nothing.
• You love bath time but hate getting out.
• You hate being hot in your carseat.
• You love, love, love being worn in any manner - Ergo, wrap or sling (thank goodness!)

{Take Two} 40 weeks... It's a GIRL!

Due date baby.

"Holy crap, I did it with no drugs!"

Proud big sister.

On Saturday afternoon October 25th at 2:34pm, we welcomed little miss Emma Takara into the world. She is 7 pounds, 11 ounces and 20 inches of sweet baby squish and we love her to pieces! Our little Emi Tako.

Baby's name: Emma Takara
Due date: October 25th
Birth date: October 25th
Weight: 7 pounds, 11 ounces
Length: 20 inches

Saturday morning around 4:30am, I woke up with contractions. Considering this was the 3rd or 4th time I had woken up at that same hour with contractions that petered out, I didn't really think much of it. After a while, I couldn't sleep, so I got out of bed to make a cup of coffee and eat a good breakfast - just in case. I started timing them - you know, just in case. I bounced on the ball, just in case. It was my due date, for goodness sake! Babies don't actually arrive on their due date. But as the morning wore on, the contractions were consistently five to six minutes apart. When Mike wandered out to the kitchen around 6am, I told him I was pretty sure his baby was going to be prompt and arrive on his/her due date.

Around 7am when the sun was starting to come up, Mike and I started walking the neighborhood with the dogs. Lily, Nana, and Papa (Sharon and Jerry) were still sleeping. It was so peaceful! The sunrise was amazing - it was fire red, then orange with purple streaks, and finally a pretty pastel pink; Montana at her finest. Some contractions I could walk through, but for most I had to stop and let them pass. The contractions were still hanging around five to six minutes apart though. I would randomly have one less than five minutes, then it would space out to eight, then back to five or six. Classic posterior baby. So we would walk, then come home and I would bounce on the ball, then we would walk again. After the rest of the house woke up, we walked the neighborhood again. What a wonderful final morning as a family of 3! It was so relaxing. The contractions were completely manageable, and I was able to spend some quality time with Lily before leaving for the hospital. Although, at that point, I had no idea when I should even go to the hospital!

Around 11:30am, my contractions still weren't budging from hovering around that five-minute mark, but they were getting a little more painful. I told Mike that I was obviously having a baby today so we might as well head to the hospital. I could tell that the baby was posterior, and at least if we were at the hospital, the nurses could give me some tips on how to get him/her to flip around. I was also worried that once the baby did flip, he/she would come fast! Little did I know how right I was.

We arrived at the hospital a little before noon. A nurse was leaving the OB unit when we walked up, so she walked us in and said, "What brings you guys in?" Me: "Oh, I'm in labor." She said that they would take me in and get me checked to see how things were going. After getting my hospital gown on, she checked my cervix and her eyebrows popped up. "Wow. You're at an 8 with a bulging bag, so we're going to go ahead and keep you!" An 8? Really? All that walking worked!

Dr. Lavin was the doctor on call, so he came in to go over our birth plan and explain which antibiotic I would receive (I was strep B positive, and am allergic to penicillin, which is the normal course of treatment.) He agreed to let me continue laboring naturally as I saw fit - after the antibiotics were administered, I was put on remote monitoring and continued walking. Mike and I walked up and down the halls, chit-chatting while he read me interesting things from the paper. With each contraction, I would stop and he would squeeze my lower back. The pressure felt amazing! It literally took the pain away. If he wasn't applying the pressure, the contractions were much more difficult, but that little bit of pressure made all the difference. We would periodically check in with my nurse and ask for advice on flipping baby; I leaned over the bed, I did cat/cow position on the bed with my tush in the air, we waddled slowly down the halls. We alternated different ideas every few contractions. Finally around 1:30, the nurse suggested I lie on my side on the bed with my upper leg hanging off the bed, then to alternate every 4-5 contractions. Around 2pm, Dr. Lavin came in to check on my progress and to request permission for a med student to attend our birth, as he had never seen a natural birth. We agreed, and he said that if I felt the urge to push or my water broke, to let them know and we would check progress again.

Within two minutes of Dr. Lavin leaving the room, my water bag burst. I suddenly really needed to go to the bathroom - legitimately, it wasn't just the baby! So after a quick bathroom break, I got resettled on my side in bed and the doctor came back in. He went to check me and said, "And there's your baby's head. Let's do this." He quickly got dressed for the delivery while quietly telling me to go with my urge to push, and that I could deliver in any position that felt comfortable to me. That was what I had wanted, but I was still shocked to hear it! All the while, I could feel the baby descending. I wasn't really pushing, but I could feel the contraction working the baby down. Then it was time to push!

Mike continued to put pressure on my back throughout each contraction, and the doctor and Mike coached me through how long and how hard to push. As baby's head was descending, her heart rate was decelerating. They kept telling me I had to get her out NOW. But then, because I couldn't push her out fast enough, they made me keep her in for a contraction to administer oxygen! I kept saying I couldn't do it, I had to push, I had to push. Suddenly a nurse chimed in, "Lamaze breathe!" That was the trick. I was able to get enough oxygen to bring her heart rate back up and with the next contraction, her head was born - with the cord was wrapped tight around her neck. Dr. Lavin asked Mike if he could cut it ("Of course! Get it off!") and then with the next contraction, it was time for baby's shoulders and body.

She got stuck. I'm not sure how many contractions it took, maybe three? But with a rush, little baby Dotter arrived at 2:34pm, blue and not breathing. She was quickly whisked to the warmer to be suctioned and whacked on the back a few times. I kept asking, "Is the baby okay? Is it okay? Is the baby okay?" They were rubbing her (I didn't even know she was a her yet) pretty vigorously and suctioning over and over again, when suddenly she cried. Mike said, "It's a girl!" I leaned back, relieved, and said, "See? She's fine. She's okay. She's fine." Then they handed her to me and we had our first skin-to-skin. You nuzzled in and kept looking at me. You were so purple, but so awake. You nursed after a few minutes but mostly just wanted to snuggle. You, miss Emma, still just want to snuggle.

It took Mike and I a full day to decide on a name. He told me he was leaning toward Claire, but I kept looking at you and you weren't a Claire. I kept telling Mike that Claire sounded too harsh to me, you were too sweet and needed something softer. "Em, Em... Emily? She looks like an Emily. Too close to Lily." That night, he texted me our name list (which we had left at home - oops.) We had Emi, Emiko, Amelia, and Emily on the list. None were quite right. Then he said, "What about Emma Takara?" I said I had to think on it, and all night long, I kept asking you if that was your name. By the next morning, we had decided it fit. Our little miss Emma - Emi Tako for short.

Dr. Graham was called to the birth due to the shoulder dystocia and he noticed right away that you were tongue-tied. He said to give it a day, it might not be an issue, but to let me know how breastfeeding was going when he came to do rounds the next day. That next morning, the first thing I told him was that he needed to fix it. And what a difference! You are a champion nurser and quite the boob-monster. While you are willing to take a bottle from your dad and sister (and she loves to give you bottles), if I come anywhere near you with on, you clamp your mouth shut and furrow your brow. You know better! And I can't help but laugh.

Oh, Emi baby. Welcome to our world! I am so grateful you are here. The whole time I was pregnant, I secretly wanted sisters, and cannot wait to see you and Lily grow up together. You are so sweet and we love you so much already. Thank you for joining our family.

{Take Two} 39 weeks

Due Date: October 25th, 2014

Musings on the Weekly Photo: Basketball belly is dropping more each day!

Marination Time: 39(ish) weeks.

Doctor Update: BP - 102/68, Heart rate - 160, Measuring around 39cm, 3 cm dilated and 70% effaced.

Weight Gain: +32 as of appointment 10/21.

Maternity Clothes: I'm in sweats if I'm home. The full panel on most of my maternity pants isn't very comfortable for long periods of time.

Fruit of the Week: Baby is as heavy as a mini-watermelon.

Name: More of the same. The more we discuss them, the more I hate them all. We are officially on name burnout and will decide once he/she gets here.

Gender: Still unknown.

Movement: Tons! Maybe it's baby trying to move down, down, down?

Cravings: I don't have many cravings, but when something hits the spot, it really does. As before, salad always settles well but might not necessarily be what I thought I wanted.

Annoyances: No, I haven't had the baby yet. Stop asking.

Highlights of the Week: Still feeling really great most days! I've definitely been nesting and have run out of things to do/organize/clean, so any day would be great. I really want to avoid an induction, but as of right now, baby seems pretty happy where he/she is...

{Take Two} 38 weeks

Due Date: October 25th, 2014

Musings on the Weekly Photo: I feel like my belly is shrinking. The doc says he/she is probably just settling in, although I'm measuring the same as last week.

Marination Time: 38(ish) weeks.

Doctor Update: BP - 102/70, Heart rate - 120s, Measuring around 37cm, 3 cm dilated and 70% effaced.

Weight Gain: +31 as of appointment 10/14. Holy water weight, batman.

Maternity Clothes: I'm in sweats if I'm home. The full panel on most of my maternity pants isn't very comfortable for long periods of time.

Fruit of the Week: Baby is as long as a leek.

Name: Same. The more we discuss them, the more I hate them all. We are officially on name burnout.

Gender: Still unknown.

Movement: Not a ton of movement, more rolls. Baby still likes to stick a leg or foot out my left side, which is always funny. Lily says the baby is giving her high fives!

Cravings: I don't have many cravings, but when something hits the spot, it really does. As before, salad always settles well but might not necessarily be what I thought I wanted.

Annoyances: I'm good! I'm only annoyed by everyone asking me constantly when the baby is coming, like I have baby ESP or something. Really? You think I'd have the baby and keep that news from everyone?

Highlights of the Week: I still feel really good! Just waiting patiently. The doctor said they won't let me go past 41 weeks, so if I don't go on my own before then, we will induce on Halloween. Two weeks or less and we get to meet this little smush!

{Take Two} 37 weeks

Due Date: October 25th, 2014

Musings on the Weekly Photo: Baby has dropped a bit.

Marination Time: 37(ish) weeks.

Doctor Update: BP - 120/78, Heart rate - 132, Measuring around 37cm, 3 cm dilated and 70% effaced.

Weight Gain: +29 as of appointment 10/7. No gain from last week.

Maternity Clothes: I'm in sweats if I'm home. The full panel on most of my maternity pants isn't very comfortable for long periods of time.

Fruit of the Week: Baby is as long as a stalk of swiss chard.

Name: We have lists but we still can't agree on any frontrunners. What I love, Mike hates. What Mike loves, I hate. We do have boy middle names though, the choice dependent upon which first name we choose.

Gender: Still unknown.

Movement: Karate chops to the left and up top.

Cravings: I'm either starving or nauseous. I can eat and be stuffed, then five minutes later want to eat again, but nothing in particular strikes my fancy. I want a little bit of something sweet after I eat but nothing over the top. Too much sugar makes me feel extra icky.

Annoyances: See above. But overall, I feel really good! I fully expected to be miserable at this point, so that is a pleasant surprise.

Highlights of the Week: We are full-term! I thought last Saturday was it but after 3-4 hours of consistent contractions that held steady at every eight minutes, I was able to fall asleep periodically. All night I would shock awake with a painful one and then nod off again after 30 minutes or so, and by morning they had petered out to being sporadic again. Just practice I guess!
